“‘Killed in packs’: Desperate Putin offers soldiers huge salaries as he runs short of troops, weapons and ammo”
“The Russian president is attempting to lure new recruits – but it may not be enough after mass casualties and as ammunition runs low”
“Russian soldiers are earning almost three times the average salary in the country, the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.
Troops are now being paid around 200,000 rubles (£1,650) per month, which is 2.7 times more than most Russians’ paychecks.
“By way of comparison, 2.7 times the average UK salary would equate to over £90,000 a year,” the MoD said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Officials say that Russian forces have become increasingly well remunerated since its invasion of Ukraine. The MoD said that in February 2022, Vladimir Putin noted that a lieutenant would receive 81,200 rubles (£670) per month. Eight months later, he announced that even new recruits would be paid 195,000 rubles (£1,650) per month.
But the Russian president is still struggling to recruit soldiers and is likely to “fail to meet recruitment targets”, the department said, as high pay and benefits fail to attract volunteers amid dwindling ammunition and resources.”
“Roman Saponkov, a Russian military blogger with more than 70,000 subscribers, wrote on Friday: “The brigade commander and the chief of the reconnaissance battalion are sending our guys in without artillery support, without drones — poor guys are being killed in packs.”
Another milblogger noted that soldiers occupying islands near the Dnipro river have complained of lack of ammunition, food, artillery support and reconnaissance.”
“Drones were fired at six Russian regions, damaging military planes at an airport.”
In what appeared to be one of the largest-scale drone attacks on Russia in months, military transport planes were damaged near the country’s border with Estonia, a Russian regional official said early Wednesday. In Ukraine, officials said the same morning that at least two people had been killed in attacks in Kyiv.
Russian officials said drone attacks had targeted six regions in the west and southwest of the country. An attack on the airport in Pskov, 30 miles from the border, damaged four Il-76 military cargo aircraft, engulfing two of them in flames, a regional governor in Russia said in a statement. Russia’s defense ministry said at least eight Ukrainian drones had been intercepted over at least five other regions of the country but did not address the event in Pskov.
No injuries were reported in the widespread attacks, which were not independently verified.”
“According to Russian sources, 4 Il-76 heavy cargo aircraft were “damaged”- one can be seen burning fiercely in this footage.”
