After weeks of saying he would never meet with House Republicans to raise the debt limit, Joe Biden was forced to cave to the Republicans after his Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen gave Washington a drop dead date for raising the debt ceiling — June 1.
The date was at least a month earlier than most experts were predicting. And with Republicans already having a debt limit bill in hand, Biden reluctantly agreed to drop his demand for a “clean” debt limit bill with no negotiations.
Biden’s position was never viable. So the president must now talk about budget cuts with the GOP or find a way to avoid blame if the whole kit and kaboodle goes south.
Democrats have one bullet they can use. Because they control the Senate, they can bring a “clean” debt limit bill to the floor and dare the GOP House to defeat it. But it’s not even clear that Democrats can pass a clean bill in the Senate, and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer may not risk it.
Despite the urgency, Biden has scheduled the meeting for May 9.
But with Monday’s news that default could come as soon as next month, the president set in motion a plan to hold talks on May 9, personally calling McCarthy as well as Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), according to a White House official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations.
The Treasury Department, sounded an urgent alarm about the need for haste: In a letter to lawmakers, Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen said the agency may be “unable to continue to satisfy all of government’s obligations by early June, and potentially as early as June 1.”

He still won’t accept McCarthy’s terms. Just watch
"Clean" is not the first word that pops into my head when the subject is Schumer.
Too bad McCarthy didn’t begin negotiations with real spending cuts and real deficit reduction in H.R. 2811. Biden and the Democrats will only ask for more spending and more debt. McCarthy is a pussy and he will fold, claiming that we can’t allow America to default. That’s BS. There is one and only fiscally sound solution. That’s massively cutting government programs and spending so that current revenue can meet debt obligations coming due. The side effect would only getting the economy out of its current funk.
And the House can send back another bill with cuts. Do the young people in the US have any understanding about the debt the Democrats are shackling them with?
Great spin but in the end the Debt Ceiling gets raised and there’s more wasteful spending in Washington.
Not Acceptable.
Has anyone noticed an uptick in Joe Manchin stories in more mainstream media venues recently? Without DiFi, who is too frail to even be wheeled onto the senate floor for a vote, Manchin is the deciding vote on what happens with the debt ceiling.
That’s not a CAVE, its a basic courtesy amongst politicians, Biden will NOT accept the House terms
Why is this being called “caving in”? They just are meeting.
Smoke and mirrors intended to deflect what the current puppet is doing.
Biden backed off initial refusal to meet with McCarthy.
RE: Why is this being called “caving in”? They just are meeting.
Previously, Slo Joe was TOTALLY SILENT about meeting or discussing Speaker McCarthy’s proposal leading people to believe that he wasn’t even going to entertain it at all.
If Trump had not spent money in the name of COVID Hillary would have said he didn’t care if people died. In a way, Trump did Dems a favor by sending out checks because they would say he set the precedent, but he didn’t foresee the 2020 steal.
Dems don’ cave like Republicans do. They re-position, reload and attack. Always forward while the GOP always retreats.
Orrrrr
The republicans are ready to cave to him.
“Do the young people in the US have any understanding about the debt the Democrats are shackling them with?”
Nope.
I see. And you know this how?
