Outside of religion, I can’t think of a single reason to get married. Can you?
Well, you might get some nice gifts out of it I guess. Could stop your parents nagging too.
Apparently the ex-girlfriend (with whom he had a kid) was the problem here*, not the wife. It might be more of a cautionary story about having kids with women you aren’t married to.
* - There is certainly the possibility that he was was also the problem.
