As Governor he's in the position of deciding whether or not to allow Trump's arrest and extradition to New York in this obviously politically motivated charade. In my opinion if New York does try to arrest Trump then DeSantis has no other option than to refuse to allow Trump to be extradited, to do otherwise would to be allow this farce of the rule of law to continue and it would make him appear weak. Republican voters would remember that he was the one would could have stopped this BS but didn't. Trump has been bashing him lately and I'm sure the easy thing to do would be to let New York take him but it's not the RIGHT thing to do, and DeSantis is in a bit of a tight spot here.
DeSantis's political future depends upon him getting things right if and when this rouge DA comes after Trump. Now is not the time for DeSantis to be popping off at the mouth.
“As Governor he’s in the position of deciding whether or not to allow Trump’s arrest and extradition to New York”
No, No, No.
The extradition process is defined in the U.S. Constitution, and it’s very clear. As long as an arrest warrant is issued and the paperwork is valid, a Governor, or any other state official, cannot stop extradition. The Constitution says the person Shall be extradited.
Trump’s lawyers could apply for a hearing in front of a judge, but they can only argue that the paperwork was not filled out correctly, the Statute of Limitations has expired, etc. Technical issues in other words. If they’ve got something up their sleeve legally, it might be worthwhile to delay extradition by requesting a hearing while they work on other stuff, but otherwise the process is pretty open-and-shut.
Be careful talking sensibly you’ll be called a never trumper any second
