Trump lashes out at DeSantis, says he regrets his endorsement of him

Former President Donald Trump is intensifying his attacks on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, calling him disloyal and saying that his political career would have been over had he not endorsed his ultimately successful 2018 campaign.

“He was dead as a dog, he was a dead politician. He would have been working perhaps for a law firm or doing something else,” Trump told a small group of reporters aboard his plane on Monday afternoon en route to Iowa, where he was to make an appearance that evening.

Trump spent nearly ten minutes going after DeSantis, who is widely viewed as his most formidable challenger for the Republican nomination. The Florida governor, who is expected to launch his campaign following the end of the state’s legislative session in May, has been embarking on a swing of early primary states to promote his newly released memoir — including in Iowa, where he appeared on Friday.

He should regret his endorsement.

If he’d endorsed Putnam, he wouldn’t have a major obstacle to the 2024 nomination.

Trump, would you just shut the hell up! DeSantis is doing a great job in FL, and have done so without your endorsement.

“Screw Trump,” how? By daring to also run for president while he is?

Do you expect this to be like Hillary Clinton in 2016, where it’s a big coronation with only token opposition (Bernie Sanders)? That is pretty entitled. Trump, DeSantis and anyone else who wants the GOP’s 2024 presidential nomination should have to earn it.

Why would you think hard core Trump lovers wouldn’t vote for the nominee....just because it’s not Trump.Or are Republicans now that stupid.

Apparently so. Some in this thread have said exactly that.

You lower yourselves when you attack each other.

Please cite, with credible sources, an instance of Ron DeSantis attacking Donald Trump. Donald Trump has been verbally defecating on Ron DeSantis since approximately election day 2022, and he has absolutely NO rational reason for doing so.

he cannot win the general election without Donald Trump’s hardcore supporters.

Any of "Donald Trump's hardcore supporters" who would refuse to support and vote for Ron DeSantis, should he win the nomination, are stupid and evil.

Bad idea to attack DeSantis this way. He should stick to MAGA issues.

I’d be interested in the source of those numbers

Taking with family friends and neighbors over last months (every one of them voted for trump) not one wants to see him as nominee this time if there is a chance to have someone like DeSantis

These are generally reasonably well off upper middle to upper class people who donate $ to campaigns and vote unfailingly

Some freepers have very good manners and would not feel right lashing out at anyone in private life. If someone criticized them in a social situation, they would let it ride, or make a joke.
I think he’s doing the exactly right thing in the circumstances.

What do you think this “exactly right thing” is meant to accomplish? Change DeSantis supporters’ minds?

“ Why would you think hard core Trump lovers wouldn’t vote for the nominee....just because it’s not Trump. Or are Republicans now that stupid.”

Two main answers to that:

First, Trump received a lot of votes in 2016 and 2020 from non-traditional Republican voters.

Second, many conservatives believe they have been repeatedly defrauded, betrayed and taken for granted by the warmongering, open borders Bush wing of the GOP and will never again hold their noses and vote for a RINO. You are free to believe that is stupid; opinions will vary but I think we can all agree that viewpoint has more than enough conservative support to torpedo an insufficiently MAGA candidate in the general.

There’s been no challenge. Trump is fallible. No matter how much people on FR like to pretend he isn’t. He does stupid crap sometimes.

“Change DeSantis supporters’ minds?”

Trump dropped the VSG hat long ago. Ron is wearing it for 2023... and beyond.

Ron supporters are thinking voters. Not swayed by hateful juveniles.

Ron has all the right enemies. Including this establishment hack.

Trump exposed his long time liberal self with his lockdowns and free rent for everyone, now he’s exposing himself as a self-worshiping narcissist who expects everyone to bow before him. Some obviously do, but the ones who won’t bow before ANY politician, like me, are just getting more turned off by the day.

This isn’t leadership. This is pure arrogance.

I love PDJT, but you’re right about that. (I guess might be a common thread about people who run for high office.)

Oh well....Biden it is.

That level of adoration over a politician is mind boggling. Especially one as flawed as Donald LGBTrump.
