Seems to be a lot of hype on both sides. The Ukrainians are slowly withdrawing, exacting as high a toll as possible from the Russians as they advance. The Russians made a big deal about occupying the east side of the river, but Ukrainians announced a withdrawal a few days ago anyway. Meanwhile the Ukrainians seems to have blunted if not stopped the Russian advance to the north and may have pushed the Russians back a little in the south. The situation will be more interesting if the Russians deplete their flanks to advance into Bakhmut.
“The Russian Army may vanish there”. The Russian Army may be vaporized by aliens there. I’m glad you’re using qualifiers on the disinfo now, it’s a little easier for you not to get tripped up managing the laughable disinfo lies you’re so fond of. I’ll be on the edge of my seat waiting to see if the Russian Army, Poof, disappears.
That is not going over well at all with the Russian military leadership, especially since they are Wagner's supply line. It should not surprise anyone that no one in the Russian general staff is not returning Prigozhin's calls. Now that Shoigu is cutting Wagner off and Putin is not intervening, Wagner is in trouble.
For Ukraine, keeping the fighting in Bakhmut means other cites are not getting destroyed. Bakhmut is getting turned into rubble. It is not going to get more rebuilt as its rubble is turned into dust. Preventing the same from happening to Sloviansk in the North to New York (Нью-Йорк) further South is a Ukrainian objective. As long as Russia has disproportionate losses, holding Bakhmut makes sense.
Wagner got its start taking over Crimea, then moved to Donestk and Luhansk. Ukraine has a score to settle with them. Now that Russia has cut off the supply of prisoners and Prigozhin is still pushing for Bakhmut, his ambition is giving Ukraine a opprotunity to wear down Wagner's core of more experienced personnel.
One possible unintended consequence is there is a preemptive "brain drain" among the lower ranks of future Russian forces going on in Bakhmut. The Wagner getting killed, would become more senior personnel filling out a western military. I don't think anyone in Ukraine's military, US or NATO planners dislike that idea.
