The current sunspot cycle has been unusually active and this is a very large complex of sunspots. In theory we would have some warning of an earth directed CME of such magnitude to threaten our power grids. The question is are the power grids ready? The damage would be to the massive transformers as key substations and power plants due to the power surge. It is untested to see if new safeguards will provide adequate protection.

Unlike a potential nuclear EMP, our electronics would be safe as there isn’t enough material to collect and concentrate the spike of power. But houses could be out of power for extensive periods. As a potential TEOTWAWKI event, knowing a big one is enroute and having preparations in place to mitigate the loss of power and potential impacts ...

Question: what about those propane whole house generators used in Florida for hurricanes - would the chips in those allow them to work after a full carrington hit?
