I think maybe you’ve hit on something. If they declare an “Other” while young, it gives them a better chance of getting into a college or a job that gives preferential treatment, because they can prove a history and that they aren’t just checking a box at the time of applying.

I read a book called The Shallows: What the internet is doing to our brains.
It’s a good read. I find that book good in conjunction with Death of the Grown Up by West, and The Closing of the American Mind by Bloom required reading.
My great-grandmother, born in 1885, often said that she was ready to die due to the way she had seen things change. And this was in the ‘70’s. As a kid, I could never understand that. Not that I want to die but I definitely get it now.
