Attack On Europe: Documenting Russian Equipment Losses During The 2022 Russian Invasion Of Ukraine

This list only includes destroyed vehicles and equipment of which photo or videographic evidence is available. Therefore, the amount of equipment destroyed is significantly higher than recorded here. Small arms, ATGMs, MANPADS, loitering munitions, drones used as unmanned bait, civilian vehicles, trailers and derelict equipment are not included in this list. All possible effort has gone into avoiding duplicate entries and discerning the status of equipment between captured or abandoned. Many of the entries listed as 'abandoned' will likely end up captured or destroyed. Similarly, some of the captured equipment might be destroyed if it can't be recovered. When the origin of a piece of equipment can't be established, it is not included in the list. The Soviet flag is used when the equipment in question was produced prior to 1991. This list is constantly updated as additional footage becomes available

@visegrad24:

The Polish-South Korean adventure continues

Poland bought 288 K239 Chunmoo MLRS (a wheeled HIMARS-equivalent) systems today (full delivery likely will take years, I’m guessing).

Warsaw is also buying:

- 1000 K2PL Main Battle Tanks
- 680 K9PL self-propelled howitzers
- 48 FA-50 attack aircraft

Poland will likely also buy hundreds of Infantry Fighting Vehicles

Ukraine ping

ftrpilot: [Here’s my take:

The Buk SAM system is very capable against low flying targets. The missiles are semi-active radar homing...the drones must not be very stealthy. The big unknown is acquisition range of the drones.

Looking at the impact explosion, I would estimate the drone was flying between 300 and 500 feet AGL. I believe they are flying at that altitude to prevent shotguns and rifles from shooting them down.

A drone at 300 to 500 feet AGL is an easy target for a SAM...however, the Russians probably consider it a fair trade one drone for one surface to air missile.

Comments welcome.]

Trent Telenko sees this as SEAD* via SAM inventory depletion:

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1582823094766358529.html

$20K Iranian drones in exchange for even a $120K Stinger is a reasonable trade. And even the cheapest Buk is $200K.

Shilkas and Gepards are gonna have to be positioned in such a way that they can deal with the threat to high-value targets. If SAM depletion becomes an issue, the rest will have to rely on hope or depend on golden BB’s (territorial troops firing their rifles** hopefully ahead of the drones) to take these drones down.

** Insanely dangerous to civilians downrange, given where many of those rifle rounds might end up.

Ukraine ping

Beaubo: [The reaction to the use of these as terror weapons against cities, seems to be an increase and acceleration of multiple Air Defense systems to the Ukraine. NSAMS, Crotale, even reportedly Israeli Iron Dome. Also some drone-specific ECM. Perhaps they will develop an effective no-fly zone of their own as a result. I’d imagine that German Gephards would make short work of them, if they came within range.]

The Russians have allegedly souped up these Iranian drones with Russian GPS (GLONASS) in place of the original inertial guidance system. The trade-off is a smaller warhead.

@visegrad24

Today, Putin introduced martial law in the 4 recently occupied Ukrainian regions

This is what the new laws allow Russia to do against Ukrainians:

- Forced mobilization of men
- Forced deportations
- Confiscation of properties & cars
- Jail for 30 days without suspicion of crime

If SAM depletion becomes an issue...

SAM depletion is a huge concern as Ukraine must keep enough SAMs in reserve to deter bombers and fighter bombers from entering the war.

Shilkas and Gepards are gonna have to be positioned in such a way that they can deal with the threat to high-value targets.

All electric substations need protection from aerial threats...drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, etc.

Thanks for the ping.

@PaulSzoldra
Here’s what it sounds like when an Iranian Shahed drone is coming in. Video sent by a western volunteer in Mykolaiv, taken about 20 minutes ago (night of 19-20 Oct).

“They burn more than they explode. That’s why they use them to target infrastructure,” he tells me.

Again...no visible smoke. Has to be double engine failure.

No SAM smoke trail...could be one of them Gepards.

TETs-6 power plant would certainly be a high value target. Glad they shot the cruise missile down.

It could be anything at this point.

Russia has lost at least 20% of its flying SU-34 fleet in the last 9 months.

20 Red survived tours in Syria, but at some point maintenance and a lack of spares will bite you.

Its not like they can say “park the fleet until we figure out why we are losing 2 per month.”

“TETs-6 power plant would certainly be a high value target. Glad they shot the cruise missile down.”

The Kh-101 missile costs $13 million.

It packs about 1,000 lbs of warhead, and is much more likely to hit what they are aiming at, than their cheap Iranian drones.

When it comes to high value targets, the relative costs of attack and defense are much more in Ukraine’s favor.

Hopefully, they will get an effective ECM drone jammer of some sort, with a tiny cost per use.

Agree. There are some clues, like no smoke trail and the pilot ejecting at the last possible moment.

...at some point maintenance and a lack of spares will bite you.

I could not agree more.

I think a few Shaeed 136s were shot down by small arms. 300 to 500 feet AGL is 100 to 150 meters. The 7.62x39 mm is supersonic to around 450 meters, and the drone are built cheap, not like attack aircraft.

If I remember right, during the first Gulf War there is CNN video of a group of Tomahawks flying low over a news crew, and at least one of them was shot down by 14.5 mm or 23 mm gun. This was due to the specific mission which made the Tomahawks more vulnerable.t A city full of people firing small arms at low flying craft is not efficient and hazardous due to falling rounds, in a emergency or until something better is available it can work.

As Zhang Fei points out in #44, the issue is one of cost effective counter weapons deployment and tactics to protect civilian infrastructure. Towed and mobile AA guns like the C-RAM or Gepard Flakpanzer are likely going to be highly desired weapons for Ukraine now.
