Didn’t they also give us Thomas?
“Didn’t they also give us Thomas?’
George H.W. Bush gave us Clarence Thomas and David Souter, one of the most liberal judges on the Court. He was 1 for 2 in putting a conservative on the Court.
George W. Bush gave us Chief Justice Roberts. For the second justice he nominate his close friend, the RINO attorney Harriet Miers on the White House staff, who had never served as a judge. After considerable pushback from Republicans in Congress, Miers withdrew her candidacy and Bush appointed Samuel Alito who has been a reliable conservative on most votes. This makes George W. Bush 1 for 2, but if his original pick for his second nomination (Miers) had been confirmed, he would have been 0 for 2 in putting conservatives on the Court.
It has often been noted Democrat appointments to the court always remain liberal. Republican “conservative” nominees often drift left on the court — Earl Warren, Harry Blackman, John Paul Stevens, Susan Day O’Connor, David Souter, and John Roberts. It remains to be seen if Gorsuch, Kavanaugh and Barrett move left over time.
Democrats never compromise or waste a Supreme Court vacancy. Too many times Republicans go for establishment pedigree (Ivy League law school, federal judge, time in the DOJ) instead of ensuring their conservative philosophy of government is rock solid.
Harvard and Yale law school teach the “living Constitution”, not original intent of the Founders. Yet for some reason every GOP president goes to the leftist Ivy League law school graduates for judicial appointments. Why?
If the Dems hadn't attempted to Bork Clarence Thomas, things may have turned out differently. Apparently, Justice Thomas holds a grudge longer than an Irishman.
