Many years ago, a promising young basketball player named Len Bias did a line of coke to celebrate being recruited to the Boston Celtics. That was his last day on earth. His death made news like a lighting bolt across the face of the globe.
Today it's a rare day that goes by without yet another fit healthy young athlete leaving us to meet his maker. The difference is that every such report contains a version of the phrase, "cause of death unknown."
And virtually never do you find included in the report the decedent's vaccination status.
Wonder why?
The sudden death of a young, apparently healthy athlete is a great tragedy. The odds that any given athlete will die suddenly are very small. Estimates range from 1 in 50,000 to 1 in 80,000 a year among high school and college athletes.1
However, each sudden death that does occur is devastating to family, friends, and the community.
The large majority of these sudden deaths are related to underlying cardiac conditions that were undiagnosed beforehand. The sudden death is usually caused by a life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia—either ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation.
