When he said: "critically important to your... Physical security", maybe he only meant something like this

Not really. Let's say you were president. If I called you and said you should or should not do something because it would put your physical security at risk, do you think I might get a visit from the Secret Service?

But urging him to not cooperate with the incoming administration is treasonous.

Absolutely. But treason is the name of the game when it comes to Democrats. Never forget that excreable Ted Kennedy (may he roast in Hell) who contacted the Soviets to screw things up for Reagan.
