It's almost impossible that she couldn't have known what the drug laws were in Russia. She apparently thought she was above the law since she was a star basketball player.
She thought she would be treated like the children of oligarchs, who could probably do all the drugs they want.
And she was right. Until relations worsened between Russia and the U.S., and an example needed to be made.
