I didn't believe you.
I looked.
You're correct...that's a very good price.
That Economist article is 90% leftist gibberish. (Yes, I read it through.)
The surprise for me is that this article would even appear in that magazine especially when their guy is president.
The US and Europe will purchase massive amounts of staples on the open markets to donate to the starving in Africa, South America and South Asia.
And prices worldwide will shoot through the stratosphere.
Cutting supply by 30+% (and that just the Ukraine war cut) and demand will remain constant.
Food will be available in the US.
If you can afford it.
Much bigger by orders of magnitude threat to human life than famine will be the next ice age which visits earth regularly every 15-40 thousand years. It has to do with changes in solar activity, which is the sole source of external energy on earth.
And obesity will be reduced yugely in United States, which will unleash amazing health benefits to Americans. I have traveled to 40+ countries and never seen so many obese people as in USA.
Bkmk
Donating food stuffs to third world countries will not end famine. The environment in each of these countries will only support a certain number of people. By artificially increasing the food (beyond what the environment supplies) only cause the population to continue to grow, which only makes the problem worse.
The following need for additional food is even greater.

“And obesity will be reduced yugely in United States, which will unleash amazing health benefits to Americans.”
Most fat people are on food stamps.
Uncle sugar will make sure they stay fat.
Everyone else will simply pay twice as much...or more...for the same sane, healthy diet.
So no, there is no upside.
The famine will hit the usual countries as it always does when there’s an economic blitz that hits the International community. I suspect N.Korea, Africa, Haiti nd any country that depends on food distributions from the Un or other countries.
In my mothers day, after dad died so young and she raised four kids on her own ....she knew how to stretch a penny. She improvised in so many amazing ways we never knew as kids we were poor...... Therefore I also have those skills.
Much truth in what you said - hoarding will be a problem.
It was once said to me at a tender age that “God has always provided enough food to fill every mouth in the world - but he gave it to man to distribute”......
Many in the third world steal what aide is sent there and sells it in the black market.....N.Korea is notorious for that.
Fat people are never without food.....even if they have to steal it they will.
I had a friend that was involved in a $400 million project to install electrical power in Africa. He was involved in putting up the power lines. He said that what they installed during the day was then stolen in the night to sell for copper scrap. They had to give up.
People,
Buy water and stack it up somewhere if you want to live.
I’m not sure what the point is to live in hell.
They’re about to begin, IMHO
It's also like when Stores close down in certain black areas here in the US - there's so much theft they can't afford to remain open and end up closing down.
One of the worst things this country ever did was to stop arresting shop lifters and giving them just a slap on the wrists. Now they all know they can go in and out of stores and keep their ‘theft’ under a certain limit and just walk away if caught.
Just wait until all these illegals get accustomed to this country before they aren't happy they can't have what working people do - theft will then be the norm and the prisons will turn them in and out like flapjacks. In other words we're gearing up for a lawless society...and evidencing that all the way to the top of our government - especially at the top of our government.
BTW. China has them using solar lighting - including solar cooking.
I eat my share of sugar because I never met a dessert I did not like. But I have weighed the same for for 40 years. It is mainly because I have exercised regularly. Most fat people I see look like they have never seen inside of a gym.
