That's the same thing I'm always telling those poor defenseless women whom I attack in dark alleyways:
"You can stop the rape at any time! Just stop resisting! Then it's considered 'consensual!'"
In WWII, the U.S. could have stopped the war at any time. Britain could have stopped the war at any time. They could have just laid down their arms and submitted to the Emperor / Hitler. Who would then have proceeded to "make nicey-nice" with us.
