With my current mid sized diesel sedan I've done 810 miles (at a steady 65mph) on a full tank (17 gallons). That comes out to about 47mpg. In my previous diesel (smaller car, smaller engine) I could get 50mpg (at a steady 65mph)).Of course diesel sedans have basically disappeared here because their numbers...per gallon burned...aren't good. However, when calculated by per mile driven they're very good.

Sadly the diesel has been crippled to pass current emission regulations. Making them less efficient and expensive to maintain.

I’ve noticed the UPS delivery trucks around here switched from diesel to gasoline (a few are compressed natural gas). And those UPS guys calculate cost of operation down to tenths of a penny a mile because that’s their profitability.
