True story. Years ago, the Japanese government just floated the idea of implementing the system we already have in the United States to tie bank accounts to social security numbers.

The run on the banks was so intense that it was dropped like a hot potato and the people who floated the idea ran for cover like cockroaches.

To this day Japan's social security numbers are permitted to be used only for social security. Sort of like the system the USA had in the 1960s before the LBJ-Nixon administration started chipping away at our rights.
