I am looking for a new Email service.
Currently have a Verizon Email address the service for which was moved by Verizon to AOL/Yahhoo after Verizon bought AOL/Yahoo.
The Email accounts originated with Verizon as part of the paid Internet service we have had with them. But before AOL that included tech support for the Email including speaking to a tech support person. Now if you want true tech support you have to upgrade the AOL mail account to a paid subscription account separate from the paid Internet service with Verizon.
I use the Thunderbird Email client application, using the POP mode with it, and want to continue using it and continue doing the POP mode (physically brings the Emails off the service providers servers and stores them locally in my PC equipment).
I am willing to pay a subscription for a good service and will never go to Gmail or any web based or cloud based Email system. I trust my own security better than the service providers (they now get hacked into more often than most individual users) and with POP the Email only resides on the service providers servers while it waits for the Email client software to go get it (my POP set up instructs the host severs to delete the emails I have drawn down to my PC ops).
Any ideas to offer??
I have two ProtonMail accounts, one paid and one freebie for spam stuff. ProtonMail is a good alternative and I see many have also suggested it.
“come back to this thread when you get ready and see what choice I finally make and why, maybe it will suit you too.”
Thank you, will do.
>Protonmail (one of mine) just started donating to Reporters Without Borders, a Soros funded org..
Wasn’t aware of that, you have a link to this i’d like to find out more
A couple years ago, I invested $5/mo to get access to their tech service for the first time. I was out of town and I had a radical crash of my iPhone 8 and had to get a new phone. Totally forgot what the passwords were for everything and had to reset several. For AOL, I had to fork over the $5 bucks to work through this with a tech person.
First, I am never dropping the AOL address (or my cell phone number) because all the family, friends and professional contacts have it. I have looked at some email clients at times that have better privacy technology though. Even if I do this, I would still keep AOL just because so many have it. I do have an ICloud email as well but have never used it.
I use eM Client to download email from Comcast. Been using it for a year or so. It’s a nice email app.
bkmk
Proton Mail has a bridge that lets you link apple mail and Thunderbird to it, and I used the one for apple mail, but I am guessing that would let apple read my emails, so I use Proton Mail only.
I have been using Proton Mail (https://protonmail.com/) for several years, and am very pleased with it. It is a SECURE email, if the receiver is using Proton Mail to. They say even they cannot get into anybody’s mail. You have to make some changes to use it, but it is easy to do. It is free if you only need a little memory, and charge according to how much memory you need. 5GB is $4 per month, ProtonMail Professional Plans provide hosted encrypted email for your company. Use your own domain and create accounts for employees (e.g. john@mycompany.com). No price stated, and 20 GB for $24.
Linux uses Proton Mail.
I didn’t know Verizon bought Yahoo.
I’ll have to look into eliminating that account. I rarely use it anyway.
Using Hotmail myself.
I have a domain and use Bluehost.
https://www.bluehost.com
Easy setup, they have great support. My email is fast with them.
Do not use GoDaddy as they prefer Office 365 and your pop3 email will be very very slow. I found that out the hard way.
They also just do email.

I should mention I have used Thunderbird for at least a dozen years.
Thxs for the info... Will take a look at Hushmail ASAP...
Getting a domain and owning/managing your own email addresses is the best way (allows for best safety & security/encyption options)...2nd best way is something like “Proton Mail” out of Switzerland. Can be encrypted email all the way if the other person you are sending and receiving with is also using it. Free up to a point (space) and then paid...see:

They are training Reporters Without Borders’ members.
Maybe ProtonMail is being politically naive, who knows?
protonmail
A good email service is one that you own and control with no influence from others. If you have a domain and an IP address, get a desktop computer and install Server software and email software, YOU OWN IT and Nobody can do anything because it is Your Email service now.
following...
You don’t buy domain name. Hover does, and does not charge you for that. You only pay like $20/year for your unique “firstname@lastname.org” address.
I got them for my whole family......many whose middle initial, like mine, is A. So the @ is our middle initial:
first name, @ for middle initial, lastname.org
Is that worth $20/year? I think so. And have for 21 years.
Hover sells the “lastname.org” to any/all who want their last name (IF available) .org as their email address.
Example: Your name is Robert Alfred Smith.
Your email address would be robert@smith.org
Many times every year I’m told how cool it is to have my name as my email.
If I don’t want my name out there, I use another Yahoo address......
But I also see that you can just use a Hover domain name itself, no? Like xxxxxx.xxx@hover.xxx?? No.
