Not for the USA. If you group by Event Category (Death, Hospitalization, Office Visit, etc) and look only at defined categories vs “none of the above”, there are 304,591 Adverse Events. However, 137,817 of these are “Office Visit”. So remove these to get to the more serious AEs and there are 166,774 “serious” AEs currently in VAERS for the USA.

Assuming there have been more than 580,000,000 shots given to date, that’s a 0.002875% chance of a ‘serious’ (defined as more than Office Visit) reaction..that’s ~2.6X more likely than dying in a car crash in a given year. But if we look at odds of dying in a car crash in your lifetime (1 in 107), you’re 325X less likely (.9345% vs .002875%) to be seriously injured by a COVID vaccine than you are to die in a car crash during your lifetime.

While the vaccines are far from perfect, it does seem like there’s an over-reaction by some to the risks involved compared to normal daily activities that we all take for granted.. And unfortunately, at least based on my own experience, the reason appears in many cases to be politically motivated vs doing what makes rationale sense for one’s own health and well being.

While I’m a big believer in people doing what’s right for them personally, it does bother me greatly that there is so much “noise” out there (much of it untrue or exaggerated) that it causes people to make decisions that are different than they would have made had they not been scared off by some silliness that’s just either plain not true or exaggerated. Way too much of that has gone on during the pandemic, and we’d probably be much better off in beating this all back if it hadn’t gotten so politicized and so “spun”..
