His motives are pure Leftist, I'm sure:
To impose the will of the state through authoritarian measures.
That he makes money through corruption on the side is just one of the "pains" he has to endure for his utopian cause.
We can chose a nickname for Merrick such as “MARXIST Merrick” and his merry band (I.e. leadership) at the new FBI (Fascist Bureau of Intimidation).
