Supply chain is down.

I drove from Kannapolis, NC to Asheville and truck volume was probably down at least 50%.

Hwy 74 through Shelby was extraordinarily quick. No big rigs.

Something is different.

In August, my wife asked me to get her a shower cap. I searched all over. Every Target, every drug store. Zero shower caps.

Finally my daughter had the idea of checking the Chinese grocery store in our town. Guess what, they had them.

Last year (2020), isopropyl alcohol became completely unavailable, from the time the COVID crisis got real in late February until approximately last October. More than six months, isopropyl alcohol was completely unavailable, including from on-line sources. Of course last year lots of things suddenly became unavailable.

Your post made me think of 2009 when I drove from south west MI to Russellville AR. Semi traffic was almost nonexistent the whole trip, as I recall I only saw a couple of dozen trucks on I 40. Yet stores still had toilet paper, there weren't big gaps on shelves where gator aid used to be, you could still find peroxide and bleach. Something is definitely different.

I schedule weekly freight shipments from Maine to Florida and delayed arrivals are now the norm. It’s driving my clients nuts, and one went bankrupt.
