My husband works in an area that has around 2% unemployment rate right now. It is a business district and every company is short and desperate for employees - from entry level jobs to six figure management levels. It’s crazy.
He was taking to a delivery guy asking how transportation was going (they are hurting for drivers), the guy said that a lot of their drivers do Uber now. But it doesn’t explain the rest.
I was “retired” from my job as a legal secretary when Covid hit. I was a certified personal fitness trainer on the side. When my office laid off most of us, I picked up my training business and I drive for Doordash. I’m a much happier person.
Have wages risen in the area with 2% unemployment for skilled labor? That would be a real indication of a worker shortage.
I suspect many of our unskilled workers going forward will be imported Afghans and Haitians...
