Continuing to call me a Martha is perjorative and ugly.
***Why is that, since you go out of your way to reduce her infraction? If she WAS out of line then it is appropriate to label it such, and to point you to it as an admonition from the Lord. If she WASN’T out of line, then why did the Lord come down against her? He did so because she was serving with the hopes of recognition of her hospitality skills.
Martha wasn’t even that bad IMO
***Then why is it a “perjorative and ugly” to call you a Martha? If the shoe fits, wear it. [Not a biblical expression]
- certainly she focused on a wrong priority
***Just as you and others are doing so, right on this thread and one other.
but it was understandable;
***Of COURSE it’s understandable, but we Mary’s need a polite way to tell you Martha’s to sit down and shut up.
and the story rather kindly
***The parallel stories of Jesus confronting false teachers of His day weren’t so “kind”, were they? After years of taking the ‘kind’ approach I have given in to the frustration of finding ways to get you marthas to shut the hell up and sit down.
illustrates the value of devotion over works while not belittling service.
***But yet you Marthas go out of your way to justify her actions, ignoring the Lord’s chastisement.
Much service is extolled in Scripture, say, washing feet or alms or housing the Samaritan or making clothes for the poor.
***Yes, and Martha’s service was not extolled. Her heart was not in the right place.
It was just a matter of when and where and Jesus instructing her does so kindly.
***It was a matter of her heart — she was focused on getting credit for being a great hostess, when all that was required was a few quick sandwiches.
Not like she is a raging b*
***Lotsa Marthas have become raging B*es in our church today, so it’s time to step up the rhetoric to anti-pharisaical, anti-FalseTeacher level of vehemence. Please tell me a polite way to tell Marthas a way to sit down and shut the hell up, a way that they will listen. Because they DON’T listen, they act as if their way was the superior way, exactly the same way Martha acted.
I am not going out of my way. Your using her name as an insult is over the top. She was mistaken. Jesus was kind and gentle in His reproof. To put her in with the Pharisees is harsh and wrong. He was very hard on them. Not on her.
