I seem to remember some horror flick from years ago about giant mosquitos that would suck you dry in one go. I forget the name of the movie though.
I've gotten as many as 37 mosquito bites in a night while camping outdoors.
So not even close to death although I had a lot of itchy bumps on my skin.
Well, Caveman (Ringo Star) had a huge one that squashed real nice (if I remember correctly)..

Fishing on Matagorda Bay, TX, in the 1950s, one uncle was swarmed so fiercely, he became extremely ill, swelled up, turned an angry shade of red, sweated profusely, and I thought he was done for (I was 8 yr old).
I don’t think it’s just the amount of blood loss that’s the problem, rather the injected blood thinners and toxins.
