From Pawhuska, Oklahoma as i recall. I dimly remember him as being Cherokee. Certainly Jocko Clark, one of the great carrier Admirals was Cherokee.
“The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors” is one of the greatest books ever written. The description of the skipper, Evans the last time he was seen alive is beyond belief. But it’s true. The story of the Sammy B Roberts is just as amazing. The town where I live lost a young hero on the Sammy B Roberts.
That’s why there is no class of ship named Halsey.
I would have transferred Halsey to the Panama Canal after that stunt. His damned ego killed a lot of good men for no reason.
Navy was able to name the USS Gabrielle Giffords and the USNS Harvey Milk. What more could we want?
Halsey was the guy for the early part of the war when the Navy was so defeatist. He’s the guy that waved the flag and motivated the Fleet. In that he was invaluable. But he was not a real strategist like Spruance. Spruance would never have left the San Bernardino Strait unguarded.
