Matthau was the best. Paired with Lemmon, they were the funniest duo I ever saw. Unlike Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, or Rowan and Martin, or Abbott and Costello, either could be the straight man for the other.

Jack Lemmon had this act worked out where he would come to the end of his rope, lose his temper, go completely ballistic, but under circumstances in which he couldn't raise his voice above a whisper, like in a church or a library. It happened in The Out Of Towners, and in at least one other picture. I loved them both.
