I submit that the problem is not stupidity but rather the lack of anything approaching what was once called the Protestant work ethic. Instead of listening, learning the key ideas, and working problems to make sure they really understand the material, they amuse themselves on their smart phones. They are squandering the opportunities they have to prepare for a career that will support them and give them a sense of accomplishment.
