“Once you drive a new car off the lot you’ve lost money on it.”
I can attest to that. In 2018 we bought a new F150. It has more power than we need and the 10 speed is awesome. But the electronics are over done and drive me nuts and get a Ram. So in late 2019 I decided to get rid of it. We paid $55,000 for it in 2018 and in late 2019 it’s trade in value was $36,000. We went to several dealers which included Chevy. The best we could get was $38,000.
Buy used. Modern vehicles if properly maintained will last over 200,000. Yet their value plunges at 100,000 miles.
Buy a truck less than 10 years old with about 100,000 miles on it and you will be happy. It may need tires and a few other things, but in the long run it will be much cheaper.
Interestingly true. You have to special order a work truck.
Most of them are built like luxury sedans on big tires. My nephew has one. Leather, power everything.
Mine is a 2500, cloth seats with over 200k miles. Still running strong, thank God. To replace it, which I wouldn’t do, with a new will run me north of $70-75k.
As someone stated earlier, folks buy a car payment. I can’t/won’t buy a payment that is as much as my principal & interest on my mortgage.
I bought a brand new Ford F150 4x4 in 1976 - it was around $6600.
Interesting....thanks
Get a Subaru Outback. They have the boxer engine low to the ground so handles curves well and much less likely to flip.
And look at what one in good condition sells for? Regardless the mileage. Can’t touch them.
“This isn’t Jay Leno’s level perfection.”
A friend refinished some vintage motorcycle fuel tanks for Leno...you’re right, VERY particular.
I’m at 393,000 on my 2011 4X4 Silverado (gasoline engine). I just put tires on it :-)
Whatever you get don’t let unusual noises or change in the feel of the drive go without having them checked. Always have the oil changed when it’s hot...
I once read, a long time ago, the cost of pension/healthcare/other union bennies contributes 20k to the cost of a new vehicle.
Buy a two or three year old unit. Let someone else take the big hit on depreciation.
Yes, indeed. Outlandish and outrageous. Haven’t purchased a new car since 1999. Every car since then has been a good, well maintained used vehicle. The last truck I bought in 2015 was a 2005 Dodge Dakota 4-door. Paid $500O cash. Still runs well but with 310,000 miles it’s beginning to show its age. I’ll donate it to charity or give it away to somebody who needs it when I find a replacement (used).
You’re right. But you understand what my question is right?. Hopefully freeper cost accountants will weigh in. Thx
Which is why dealers concentrate on monthly payment and ignore actual cost of the vehicle.
Customer: I want my payments at $400 a month
Dealer: Your payment is $397 (for a gazillion months)
I long for those days...
Per the BLS inflation calculator, that’s about $31,221 in 2021 dollars.
I have a ‘01 F150 with 227k miles, runs like it’s new.
I also have a ‘05 F350 with 177k miles. Got a good deal on it and had it painted. Paid for. Runs perfect and looks new.
1 to 10..are you insane? The actual cost to manufacture a pick up is based on the options. The back up camera may cost the manufacturer 3-400 bucks . But they have to pay the assembly line person to put it in and the extra engineering for the mounts and electrcal connections. Figure around 450 bucks a truck. The dealer price will be 800-1100. . The mark up was 2-3x the cost. But the cost of the truck bare bones is probably 20k - bare bones . Add wheels, leather, carpet, stereo, cruise control, a quad cab, bigger wheels, chrome rims, chrome grill, blue tooth stereo, etc. boards etc. And the costs go up. A i would say the mark up goes up as the options go up. But 10-1 is a purely stupid GUESS. I would guess the dealer cost for a high end truck is probably 15-18 grand. Where as a bare bones f-150 my cost the dealer 17k amd they sell it for 23k. Dont forget shipping. Its real.
I remember when a decent brand new pickup truck cost $1999.00
Go to BringaTrailer.com and Get a 1987 Big Three Full sized Truck in near mint condition with only 8000 miles, and customize it to your liking. That’s what I would do,. When Trucks were TRUCKS.
I’ve gotten some great vehicle deals off Craigslist. That would include several motorcycles, all of which proved to be great deals.
Buying new is stupid unless ya just have money to literally burn. And then ya get a computer with wheels and all the bull s**t and problems that goes along with that.
