It is a song to be sung by a man. I never understood why she did it.

Because La Baez really admired the rank and file Confederate soldier. He was a true rebel fighting to defend his small piece soil. She also did not disparage the US soldiers in Vietnam.

Just as a thought, This song was written by Joan's sister, Mimi Farina. Farina was a wonderful song-writer. Perhaps Joan may have recorded as an honor to her sister. There is probably a good disc/songlist of her music out there. IMHO the greatest version ever made was done by Steve Young of Alabama. If you don't have your neck hairs risen by this version... give it a listen. There is an old story that Waylon, who covered many, many of Steve Young's...Supposedly, Waylon said in front of several witnesses that "If Steve Young gets any better, I'm gonna just have to kill him myself". Of course they were fast friends who shouted out all kinds of stupid stuff during jam sessions. Steve died in an accident several years ago. I hope his legendary music continues to catch un-heard years of the older generations yet to come. If you're a misplaced Okie, (like me) Check out the song, "My Oklahoma". His wife at the time, wrote that song.
