There were 14k people in each arm of the Moderna study. In the 9 weeks following vaccination 185 of those getting the placebo contracted symptomatic Covid vs 11 in the vaccine group, and the severe count was 30-0.
You can wave you hands and say statistical noise but that's not a very convincing argument.
I didn’t wave my hand, I just said it could be viewed as noise. How balanced were the two arms relative to age or other risk factors? I am sure the data is out there and with this sample size it should be well balanced by randomization. But it’s another potential factor.
I was chatting with BeauBo about this last week - something close to 40% of people over 80 show zero immune response from vaccines in general, including these. I am told that this is normal for that age group but it’s also a little disturbing considering that the elderly are the most at-risk population from the virus.
