Part of that Irish blessing I never understood: May the road rise to meet you.
Sounds like, may you always walk uphill.
No comprehende, senior.

Well...
My wish for you is that may you always walk downhill with the wind at your back.
I suspect sumthin is lost in translation,

If anything, the road *not* rising to meet you when struggling home from the pub would be a better blessing. ;^)
Hey, it’s okay to hit my own roots.

In her memoirs she says that she refused to say the line at first as she “couldn’t possibly say that to Duke”, but Ford insisted, claiming he needed a genuine shock reaction from Wayne. The line remains a mystery to this day. Interesting bit of trivia. I remember that scene well.

The Irish sometimes habe a circumspect way with words.
When you reach the crest of a hill trail, with the wind at your back... you can see the rest of the trail for miles.
So the road rises to meet you. You’ll never get lost.

Doesn’t sound like a bad place to get lost, anyway. :^)

Well... these days, yeah. But back then if you wandered off the main trail you would very likely get waylaid within a kilometer. Especially if darkness falls.

The movie's title is actually: The Quiet Man.
Hubby and I did watch it last night.

There is an interesting back story associated with the making of this movie and its financing. Studio insisted that it would not be made, believing that
The Quiet Man would do poorly at the box office unless another movie was made by John Ford and Wayne, which they accomplished. The required movie was not a success.
The movie was shot on a shoestring with small expectation of box office success and even less that it would turn into a perfect gem. Meanwhile, director John Ford assembled what amounted to a kind of ensemble company who were not unaccustomed to lifting a glass after hours.
There is a documentary concerning the making of the movie, if I recall correctly it was hosted by Miss O'Hara herself.

I believe the "required" movie was
Rio Grande - the 3rd member of the Ford/Wayne
Cavalry Trilogy.

Question: Did they have a warning before the movie started so as not to offend modern sensibilities? I didn’t get to see it until the scene where O’Hara is caught cleaning Wayne’s cottage.

Watched it last night. One of my favorite John Wayne films.

Did they have a warning before the movie startedLast year I decided to get some movies that hubby and I like before they disappeared or were censored in some way. The Quiet Man was one of those movies. So, no, no warning.
