Besides the points LesbianThespianGymnasticMidget, a pi-hole keeps your ISP from seeing all your DNS queries.
Some do and the majority of those ads are not particularly bothersome.
When you search for hemorrhoid treatment on your phone while out and about and every device in your house starts showing hemorrhoid pillow ads that I see as a teensy little problem.
When you discuss bicycles around your alexa device and all of a sudden all your devices have cycling related ads, I see that as a teensy little problem.
You don’t understand how the web works nor how insidious these ad companies are nor the level of privacy you do not have.
Everything you do is recorded digitally and is for sale in some manner or form be it what you bought, where you were, what you looked at, etc.
Remember the DOD purchased the cell phone location data for the Jan 6th for the DC area.
Blocking ads is 1 step. There are many other steps you can take to protect the modicum of privacy we retain. VPN, Faraday bag for your phone, pre-sat connected car, paying in cash, etc.
I don’t primarily run the Pi-Hole to block ads. I run it through a VPN to root servers to insulate what I am looking at from as many prying eyes as I can.

Sometimes. Hit up https://www.dnsleaktest.com/
Your ISP may be running a “man in the middle attack” hijacking your dns requests forcing use of their servers. Some do. The way around that is to set up the pi on a vpn bypassing their ability to hijack that traffic.
“I run it through a VPN to root servers”
I’m an embedded software guy but the internet isn’t my specialty.
Regarding VPN, your VPN provider knows who you really are. How secure is that? Better than nothing?
My Faraday bag consists of not carrying a phone most of the time. My main defense mechanism is that I’m a boring guy.
Better than nothing as you said. The provider claims not to do any logging but that is their word only. I also leave my phone home a lot, but like today, when we are getting hit with 10 inches, that is not wise.
thanks for all the detailed info on PIhole.
i found info on how to use it on my PI400. maybe i can incorporate into my cable internet
Daddy asks, "Well, Beau, what did you get teached in college?"
Beau: "I learnt, πr-squared".
Daddy, angrily: "That's ridiculous—We sent you to college for that?
Pie are round! Corn bread are square".
LOL!
