NOT A .357 Magnum! At night it will blind you on the first shot and you’ll be a goner after that.
Pump shotgun 1st, good semi-auto 2nd, any handgun you practice with and can handle instinctively and under stress.....
ROTFLMRAO.
Fwiw, a famous Texas Ranger of the 1920s had a double-barrel 20-gauge “pistol-like weapon” (with 9-inch tubes) that he called, “MY LITTLE FRIEND”.
He STOPPED any number of BADMEN in their tracks with “one more load of buckshot than they could carry away”.
(That firearm is ON DISPLAY at the TEXAS RANGER MUSEUM in Waco, TX)
NOTE: That old-time Ranger SGT was often called, “THE WHISPERING DEATH”, as he had a problem with his voice-box.
yours, satx
My ITE hearing aids convert to excellent earplugs with one button push. Amazingly effective.
Mossberg 500 12 gauge shotgun with 18.5-inch (470 mm) cylinder bore barrel installed. 6 shot (one in the chamber, and 5 in the pump tube magazine.
Ammo:
For home defense, 00 Buckshot is very good.
Prefer to use Winchester Defender ammo 115 grains, is a segmented 3 part rifled slug in each round— extreme amount of power and force in a shotgun— lethal close in.
A good quality 20 gage pump shotgun. Next question
20 gauge for newbies, ladies, and anyone else at the range inside residences.
There are now very effective rounds for 32acp pistols.
Taurus Judge 5 shot or Smith & Wesson Governor 6 shot.
They can fire ordinary .45 caliber colt slugs, or .410 caliber shotgun rounds or birdshot or PDX rounds.
It’s like a sawed off shotgun with a rifled barrel. Not too much kick, either.
+1
There’s sumthin to be said for mouseguns. You get used to carrying them everywhere, so you are that much more prepared.
Most people give up on carrying their 6 inch Colt Python or Desert Eagle. Excellent stopping power but bulky, heavy, inconvenient.
And mouse guns are usually low caliber, light kickback, cheap rounds to fire and get proficient at.
The vast majority of gunfights occur within 7 yards and almost ALL of them end when the first person gets hit.
So mouseguns with a $5 laser sight could be the most effective way to have that gun WITH you rather than left at home.
Snake rounds in .32 would be effective home defense.
Valid argument.
I live in an very rural area. I’m shopping for a new handgun. Have wanted a Ruger Blackhawk 357 magnum with 6” barrel, I have reloaded since I was a child and think that is the most logical choice here. Am not so into the Concealed Carry thing, so far it had not been an issue here.
Texas currently has lots of pro gun legislation pending. One of those is Constitutional Carry. I’d like that to pass.
It is hung on his fireplace mantle complete with the very long bayonet. A very long weapon like the photo you posted.
It used a black powder 500 grain lead bullet. He still has an original government issue bullet.
Yes. But I know of a case of forced entry by druggie that survived 3 rounds from a 1911 45 pistol.
Yes, a 22 will easily kill a man.
I don’t own a .32 or a .25
I have a 20 gauge, semi-auto with a 5 round mag - loaded with bird shot for in-home because at relatively short distances the shot is close enough together to punch a big ragged hole through someone and not be cohesive enough to continue through walls.
Ruger .380 is first choice though because I am good with it and it will only semi-deafen the old, already ringing, ears in a confined space.
S&W EZ is a pistol. Sounds like you have a revolver. Trade off is revolvers won’t jam. But pistols usually have a higher round capacity.

A 105mm howitzer.
Exactly-—a cop told me once===
“Don’t worry about your aim-—Put the stock alongside your hip & point it at intruder. Pull trigger & pellets in shotgun shell will do the job.”
At that point-—who cares about how loud it is inside your house???
Ask him what his family will have to pay out for the funerals of the family members.
Stupidest reason I have ever heard for NOT defending yourself & your family.
