I watched Kabuki once. Long, has a dinner break, seats designed for Japanese butts, but very entertaining. But your metaphor is accurate. The stage hands who move scenery are dressed in black, in plain sight, but you’re supposed to pretend in your mind that you can’t see them.

Kind of like how we are supposed to pretend that January 6 was a full-blown riot (I’ve also seen it described as ‘riots’) and an attempted ‘insurrection’ by Trump supporters when what I saw with my own two lying eyes was something different.
