"...housed racks of switching relays..."
1977: I'll never forget one time when I was working as a temp for a moving and storage company. We delivered a relay switch bay about the size of a large telephone booth to the local Bell. The vast building was full of relays clicking. The clicks coming randomly from everywhere made an amazing sound.
The man in the building had us dolly the bay over to a huge socket in a row of relay bays. We carefully lowered it into place and it joined the rest of the clickers. The man consulted a few dials on the front and pronounced a job well done.

Most employees in both companies have no idea it is going on
Sounds like my stint in the USPS. None of us knew they were going to offer us an early retirement plan until just a few months before. We were like mushrooms. They kept us in the dark and fed us bull💩 🙄😀

The catch to this special treatment was allowing the Feds unfettered and confidential access to the network, which continues to this day.

You are a little naive.
Four fifty pound bags of ammonia nitrate (fertilizer), 2-3 gallons of diesel fuel and a blasting cap would do more damage than that. The only part of that I can’t buy legally is the blasting cap.
This was fairly low tech.

NSA uses towering, windowless skyscrapers, and fortress-like concrete structures that were built to withstand earthquakes and even nuclear attacks.
Telecom buildings have long been recognized as critical infrastructure and are built as reinforced structures to withstand earthquakes. Not so few were designated nuclear attack shelters in the 50s-80s.

This is NSA bomb-shelter hardened architecture.Bullshit, this is typical code mandated building construction...........
Do yourself a favor and google when the buildings on that block were built...........Sheesh!
To: Governor Dinwiddie
yes att buildings in cities have always been fortresses. Going back to the early cold war they were designed to withstand nuclear attacks, before the bombs started getting too big.
To: Bryan24
This was my thought as well. Hardened site. Audible warning beforehand. Explosion was more like a large flashbang. No serious cratering at site of explosion. Strange.

I’m not an expert, but photos I’ve been seeing appear to show evidence of the explosion outward from the building instead of inward from the street. So far, I have seen the directional pattern of the bubris but no signs of a shredded motorhome, chassis or drivetrain/powerplant components. The few photos just outside of the building do not seem to show an area where an RV was removed. Granted, the early photos I’m seeing are on the internet but the early photos often are from private individuals.

Almost all Bell System Central Offices are built this way. The were designed to withstand bombings, earthquakes and tornados.

M80 Firecrackers might work for blasting caps.

A reported backstory on the ‘suspect’ was that he had an explosives handler license for 5 years - late 80’s - early 90’s, IIRC.

Remember years ago there was a post that details an AT&T tech in San Fran discovered the huge tab from the ocean cable? Mystery cable going to a floor no one was ever allowed on.

But but but it was the CIA.
