The line MOST people miss-hear in that song is because of how it’s sung.
“Only shadows ahead

Many people hear that second line as “They’re declaring the roof.” Like on a tax form.
On John Lennon’s version of Stand By Me.
I swear he’s singing, “The moon is the only flying pussy.” Instead of “The moon is the only light we’ll see.”
I’ve told several friends about this and now that’s the only way they hear it now. I’ve supposedly “ruined” the song for them, LOL.
