When a president survives a disease after a three-day hospitalization - and that disease has killed more than 200,000 of his fellow citizens and sickened friends and colleagues at his own workplace - then his posture should be one of humble gratitude, not boasting and bravado.

Did the 200,000 not fight? Were they not strong? What about the hundreds of thousands more who faced a tougher course of illness and still battle symptoms today? And there should be but one response after the Rose Garden event . . . "I'm sorry."
