Hello - i'm stuck in CA. the politburo here has graciously allowed gyms to reopen, but muzzles are required and valve masks have been banned for being too comfortable.
i'm going to order some single-layer gauze masks off of etsy, but does anyone have any recommendations on how i can conceal the valve holes on a valve mask? (maybe by removing the valve and sewing a thin layer of gauze over it?)
Has anyone used neck gaiters and cut vents in them?
Is it only gyms you’re meaning? If so, and if emotions aren’t yet at the point yet of saying “Fornicate all this solid waste”, what about working out at home?
The owners are compelled by law to ensure you are compliant under threat of $5,000 fines per occurrence and their license to operate.
Just cancel your membership.
Yeah, in California you must wear a face covering as described in CDC.
Shield is not a covering....to them.
I would tap that...
Ok. That’s just hot.
I like that one.
Most people wouldn’t know what that is.
They looked like welder masks, except they are clear.
Work out at home, screw the nazis.
LOL! That’s excellent. The claymore mask.
Where did you get that? I want ‘em!!
Just search for claymore mine mask, they’re all over the net.
Yep, just found ‘em. Thanks.
I’ve used neck gaiters from SpecOps. Mostly because I used them in Kuwait for protection in dust storms, then later for camouflage during deer season, so I had some. I fold the nylon knit over double and use a strip of paper towel between the nylon layers. Airflow is about like an N-95 mask. I keep waiting for some snowflake to complain about the military camouflage patterns.
A valved style half mask is going to take maintenance to keep its performance up to spec. The valve itself is a thin rubber like disk that is very flexible and delicate. The valve must be clean to function or there could be leak by when you inhale. Also, the cleaning must be mechanically very gentle or the disk can easily be torn or punctured.
I had to maintain certification for full and half face respirators and occasionally for SCBA as well in addition to often carrying various types of emergency escape respirators in a belt pouch. This was for working in chemical plants and refineries for the most part plus doing confined space entry. Also. I had a high end microbiological lab for about 10 years. Dont waste $$$ on a valved mask if you are not going to use it exactly and non-modified as per manufacturers instructions including the maintenance.
By the way, how you check the seal on any mask is to inhale very deeply. You need to feel the mask sucking tight to the face. If you dont feel this suction then there is an an air leak. Not good to have a leak. A leak can kill you. On the flip side, not having a seal can cause non-filtered air to escape the mask thus contaminating a sterile room or infecting a patient with your germs thus for example, you would not use a valved mask in sterile room or medical room.
Low-cost measurement of face-mask efficacy for filtering expelled droplets during speech
ok, and then the gym owners throw me off of their private property for not following their rules, where am i going to lift?
thanks for the super helpful answer, but i sent you down a rabbit hole because i was talking about these kinds of valved masks:

no non-n95 mask is going to be effective in stopping transmission of the disease, so if i wear a neck gaiter or non-valved mask, i’m still going to be spewing covid everywhere, it’s just going to be harder on me to breathe.
the problem is valved masks like the above are verboten in california. i’m asking how i can keep the valves but disguise them so i don’t get in trouble for it.
yes, but kalifornia has still forbidden them. that’s why i’m trying to use a valved mask but hide the valves.
Frequent a business that believes in the constitution. I believe in property rights, so they can ask you to leave and you can decline to pay the leftist bastards. My 23 year old daughter quit her gym over the same issue back in May or June. She found a better one.
that’s probably the best suggestion. the problem is the other places i could get a good life sciences job and my wife can work in tech would be MA, NJ, DC. I’d much rather be in CA than those sh!tholes. We’ll stack $$ and then go to somewhere like redding or if the rest of CA goes the way of SF and LA, we have passports to a nice place in south america.
