Michael Bilandic (1923-2002), who served as mayor of Chicago from 1976 to 1979, was a Croatian-American. The current archbishop of Chicago is of Croatian ancestry.

Earlier there was a Czech mayor, Anton Cermak (1873-1933), who born in Bohemia and brought to America as a baby. He was mayor of Chicago from 1931 to 1933 and was mortally wounded in Miami by an assassin who was trying to kill President-Elect Franklin Roosevelt.
