Except that huge numbers of rural people do not have access to adequate Internet. He's trying to make Internet access ubiquitous. If he can keep latency down and speeds up it will be huge.
Not just rural.
And if you’re a Spectrum customer in Upstate NY, you know what I mean.
His latency should be pretty good.
LEO plus light travel faster in a vacuum than on fibre.
We will see.
That's me. I signed up to beta test Starlink. They need users in northern latitudes to start. I'm at just over 42°N. We'll see. My internet now is terrible via cell phone "hot spot."
Every time you hear about some stimulus package coming out of Washington, you hear about the need for broadband funding....
For anyone outside of a metropolitan area, the question I have is WHY...??
Let Elon Musk develop the system, then whole towns or rural areas could get online for a relatively small amount of money at really high speeds...
This type of technology if it works is going to have a number unforeseen consequences...
Think of all the people who live in NYC or other major metropolitan areas who are facing dwindling police departments, rapidly rising crime, sky high taxes, etc....
Give them the chance to move out into the country and get really good high speed internet service and the reasons for staying in the city will get less and less....
Places like NYC, Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago, etc...are already bleeding population and this will only cause it to accelerate...
