I’m not able to speak to that. There are two issues here:
1. What Catholic Dogma requires.
2. What people do on their own.
I went to Mass many times at school where we had a church. My family was very athletic and we had 2 women join the convent as nuns.
I have never been taught that behavior, nor seen it in my strict family.
People do lots of things on their own.
