Black Swans -
This category is open again due to a substantial increase in solar activity this month. The sun woke up from its century level lack of sun spots with vengeance and even more this week. Earth-orbiting satellites detected the biggest solar flare in more than 3 years yesterday (Nov 29th). The blast site is located just behind the sun’s southeastern limb. As a result, the explosion was partially eclipsed by the body of the sun. It might have been an X-class event. X-class events are of a great concern, as these caused events like the famous Carrington event in the 1800’s that resulted in telegraph stations catching on fire and auroral activity far south towards the equator. In 1985 a slightly smaller X-class event crashed the power grid in Quebec. Needless to say, this is 2020 and an X-class CME direct hit is not what we need to be dealing with now.
Fascinating. I remember ‘85 well. I did not know of any of this stuff of which you speak. Thanks, Godzilla. BUMP!
Aargh, typo. the 1984 quebec event was actually March 6, 1989. my bad
