California’s new ammo law hurts the wrong people — and doesn’t stop ‘bad guys’ with guns

When California started requiring people to pass background checks to buy ammunition on July 1, hunters hoped for the best and braced for the worst. What happened was far worse than we feared.

The premise of the new law is that people who can’t have guns shouldn’t have ammo either. I don’t know anyone who disputes that. Bad guys shouldn’t have guns or ammo.

~~SNIP~~

Here’s where it fell apart: The state Department of Justice finalized regulations to implement the law just before it took effect. There was no time, and no effort, to raise awareness, no time for gun owners to verify they were in the database, and most critically, that their ID matched their information in the database.

In the first four months, the checks thwarted 101 ammunition purchases by prohibited persons, and a staggering 62,000 purchases by people who had every right to buy ammunition. More than half of the rejections were due to data mismatches, such as an address change; one-third were because buyers weren’t in the database.

Any Californians here have their own ammo purchase horror stories?

Walmart has major issues as well. All Walmart has to do on handgun ammo is require a concealed carry permit to be able to buy ammo. Simple. No sell us ammo, we don't defend ANYONE in Walmart except immediate family. Your choice friends.

You are missing the target. Walmart and their lawyers DONT WANT CCW to carry on property. Their insurance companies also want a victim environment. Our only hope is still state laws that allow us to carry in these places.

I’ve been lucky. My brother in law is 75 years old. We hunt together. Since he’s not in the database, he can’t buy ammo without huge problems. I know lots of folks like this. Most get in the database or break the law and buy out of state.

"California’s new ammo law hurts the wrong people"

The headline writer assumes that this wasn't intentional.

Cali is run by a combination of incompetents and fascists, take your pick.

Because we all know the 2n’d A specifically says

“Shall not be infringed... UNLESS you can’t pass a federal or state background check first when trying to buy ammo”

The left have succeeded in violating the 2n’d
A via loopholes and via state regulations-

WA State has proposed this and all the liberals have embraced it, naturally.

This is nothing more than a back door way to ban all legal gun sales.

Yet nothing is done to prevent and stop illegal gun use in the activity of a crime.

So online ammo purchases in Cali are prohibited now? It’s a four hour drive for me to the Oregon line (six hours to Idaho) but I’d do it in a heartbeat in defiance of the tyrants.

The goal was to hurt “the wrong people”. They know that they cannot stop criminals from buying ammo, even if they wanted to, but that’s not the point. This is all about marginalizing gun culture and making it harder for young people to get into shooting - hurting the wrong people on purpose, to drive them away from the shooting sports.

It’s a particularly stupid law, intended to discourage ammo sales out of existence, and what it actually accomplishes is to make ammo sales so cumbersome that weekend shooters are going to accrue arsenal sized stockpiles because it’s too much trouble not to. If it’s that much trouble per transaction, they’ll limit the transactions...or find ways around the laws, at which point the state will have succeeded in its clear intent to make all gun owners criminals. This part isn’t accidental, it’s deliberate.

[[The goal was to hurt “the wrong people”. They know that they cannot stop criminals from buying ammo,]]

Yup- disarm law abiding citizens, knowing full well criminals won’t obey the law- the law abiding citizens then have no means of self defense- this is the goal of the left— enabling criminals and binding the hands of law abiding citizens so criminals can take advantage-

It prevented only 101 sales to criminals while preventing ammo sales to 62,000 law-abiding citizens? The law is doing exactly what the leftists wanted it to do.

“California’s new ammo law hurts the wrong people — and doesn’t stop ‘bad guys’ with guns”

Was never intended to ‘stop bad guys with guns’. It is intended to disarm Americans. Time to quit putting up with their subversive tyranny.
