She is allowing for fear and paranoia to be the guiding forces in her life. Most folks try to stay away from such negative trouble-magnets whenever possible.
Sometimes you attract what you put out.
It can start over nothing.
A simple look can provoke this sort of response:
“What the **** are YOU Lookin’ at, you dumb MF???”
We have all met people like that. The best thing is not to react at all or even give eye contact. This is somebody with
a big mouth and a weak ego.

Yes. Everyone should realize that the whole United States is a prison now, and that prison inmate rules are in effect. Whatever the SOBs want you (or your children in front of you) to do, just do it. [Load of irony there.]
Making eye contact is the way that I no longer needed that 2/5 of a second reaction time. Being acutely aware is one of the first tenets of street smartness. Convicts should be the ones to avoid eye contact.
[Backing up, feet apart and always in contact with the floor, scooting carefully sideways in small increments.] "I don't want any trouble now. Stop! Drop the knife! Drop the knife! [Pop! Pop!] "Hello, 911? Someone just attempted to attack me with a knife..."

And wear a body cam always. Don’t let the scumbags win. Get the goon’s nasty, drug zombie stare in video with an automatic WIFI upload. Good evidence for anyone needing to stop a drug zombie to save one’s life. Crooks who would attack someone for looking back at them tend to look like crooks in video with all of the usual visual signs and bizarre or shaggy grooming. The attempted attack is icing on the cake.
