Confused by Brexit? Get ready for Wexit.
Political leaders representing a large chunk of Canada are talking about breaking off from the rest of the country in the wake of Justin Trudeaus re-election victory and this time theyre not primarily in French-speaking Quebec, long known for its independent streak.
Instead, its the countrys western, oil-dependent provinces fueling the breathless talk of secession, amid a perception that Trudeau and eastern urban liberals are calling the shots at their expense. And it's emerging as one of Trudeaus most complicated headaches as the Prime Minister moves toward the start of his second term next month.

Is it real? Yeah. People are mad, Randy Hoback, a Conservative Party member of Parliament in central Saskatchewan told POLITICO. Ive never seen it like this.
Citizens in the Western provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan agitated for political change in Ottawa over the last year as attempts to build a coastal pipeline expansion continued to falter and as farmers got trounced by trade tiffs with China.

Oil dependent ???
Funny, I always thought that Western Canada were oil producers.
“Citizens in the Western provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan”
I’m sure Vancouver is included in this.
I’ve read about this. It’s so sad because I see that Canada’s liberalism is at a whole other level, even compared to here...and they got to that point long before we did.
That's an option but I think they are talking about an independent state. Frankly given the current stupidity going on in DC and the rest of this country I can think of why anyone would join it.
“The world is divided east/west, not north/south” - Ronald Reagan.
Well Canada does have regional problems but I think we over state this as West vs East. In BC it is Vancouver Island and downtown Vancouver against the rest of the province. Even Edmonton in Alberta and Winnipeg in Manitoba are left wing strong holds. It is really similar to the USA where it is rural and suburban vs the city. And the reason for the Liberal Party voter efficiency is similar to the Virginia effect. Liberals are moving out of the city into the suburbs - bleeding into the suburbs if you will and turning them into Liberal Party ridings.
I have come across many Albertans on facebook and there are tons of liberals in Calgary. Alberta is maybe equivalent to New Jersey on the conservative scale - the rest of the country even more left wing.
We can’t either.
Don’t make assumptions. Canadians are very left wing compared to the USA>
And AB has to look into diversification. If the electric car dream becomes reality what happens to oil?
That should read “oil industry dependent”
How do they make the electricity for the cars? What's at the other end of the wire?
Alberta has plenty of coal, though they are trying not to use it for environmental reasons.
The world isn't going to be able to do without burning oil or coal for years to come, but if when it does, there are still other things you make out of them.
Western Canadians are more like moderate Democrats yes.
Splitting up? Canadians are NOT people of action so it will never happen. We will just take our lumps.
Also, we have imported so many Syrian refugees Sharia law is on its way. Canada as you know it will be gone in 20 years.
Yup. Talking anti-abortion gets you life in political purgatory here.
If those Provinces joined the US, the average temperature in the US would fall ... just sayin ;)
Yes, and so I wonder I guess what does the US do - burn natural gas is my guess. And China will be using coal for decades to come I am sure.
The perverse result of electric vehicles in my wildest guesses is that less demand for oil will push its price down, making gas even cheaper. So there will be this ongoing interplay between gas vehicles and electric vehicles. Some 90 year old lady who drives once a week will have next to no incentive to buy an electric car. Long distance commuters will have the most incentive.
British Columbia could go alone, very liberal like our northwest but the prairie provinces need a connection and would make great states, bringing their resources and getting American style freedoms.
In the game of Risk Alberta was kinda important.
It’s all noise.
Believe me.
