This sounds similar to a documentary I saw about body modification. There was a black studies professor that had tribal scarring, bone in the nose, and dressed in “authentic African clothing”. After years of teaching black studies, he finally took a trip to Africa. To his bewilderment no one dressed like that or had the body modifications. They wore western style clothes from jeans and t-shirts to business suits. He realized he whole world view was a sham.
Just shows what a self contained bubble academia lives in.
