This story is obviously fake, but it really did run in the Santa Monica Observer. Yahoo picked it up from there and Dan from Squirrel Hill picked it up from Yahoo and it then got posted here.
The Observer claims they got the “cultural appropriation” angle from a Santa Monica PD press release. The SMPD doesn’t put out many press releases on their own website, but they do post frequently on Facebook. I couldn’t find anything on their Facebook page or the Santamonica.gov site mentioning cultural appropriation.
