I use Startpage quite satisfactorily.Occasionally i use both it and Google to compare the results and prefer Startpage.

Startpage uses Google as the searcher, but blocks reverse access from outside to your comouter, as well as blocking the search listings to sites with porngraphic titles ot text listing. Startpage protects you. Google has different objectives and does not protect you from invasion.
