I'm not sure what any of this has to do with the interview, but surely he's in an "damned if you do" "dammed if you don't" situation.
If he were breaking up on camera ten days after his mother died, people would be saying he was too emotional.
His mother dressed him up as a girl when he was a young child. He should be celebrating.
