Isn’t Hadrian’s Wall almost always depicted as a negative watershed moment for the Romans? It was the moment they stopped expanding and turned inward, a high-water mark and cultural turning point that changed the nature of Roman civilization, a prelude to its eventual collapse. No?

It would be different if the new ‘people’ would assimilate and respect their host country. But that’s not gonna happen, no matter how much free stuff we give away.
